Music
“Sing
joyfully unto God our strength; make a cheerful
noise to the God of Jacob”.
These words from the book of Psalms encapsulate
something of what we understand about the place of
music in worship. In Dartmouth, where we are blessed
with a large and dedicated band of choristers,
music is integral to two of our Sunday services –
the 11 a.m. Sung Eucharist and 6.30 p.m. Choral
Evensong or Compline – and also for many weddings,
funerals and memorial services, and occasional
weekday festivals.
For almost 14 years we had an unauditioned SATB
parish choir, now numbering some 25 singers, which
rehearses each week and sings wherever the service
is being held: St Clement’s, St Petrox or St
Saviour’s. Both newcomers to our parish and
holiday-makers who are accustomed to singing in
their home church choirs, are warmly invited to sing
with the choir; regular visiting singers from as far
afield as Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and
Worcestershire have sung with us over many years.
Accompanied by any one of three highly accomplished
organists, who also play splendid organ preludes and
concluding voluntaries, we lead our fellow members
of the congregation in singing hymns, worship songs,
psalms, canticles, anthems and congregational
Eucharistic settings from a wide range of composers
and musical genres.
Weekly rehearsals are held on Friday evenings from
7.00pm until 9.00pm at St Saviour's Church during
the winter and St Clement's Church in the summer.
New members are always welcome, just come along!

Our
churches are also very much involved in local
musical events, St George's holds a charity concert
each year on St George's Day and St Saviour's often
hosts concerts by Dartmouth
Orchestral Society, Britannia Choral Society, the
Britannia Royal Naval College Volunteer Band and
Dartmouth Rock Choir, to name but a few!
During Dart Music Festival St Saviour's is one of
the principal indoor venues and our Regatta Recitals
have become a regular feature of the Port of
Dartmouth Royal Regatta.

Having begun with the Psalmist, who better for a
closing quotation than the great Martin Luther?
“I place music second only to theology.”
